Module Reflection
During my time at Temasek Polytechnic and ITE, I gained experience in writing reports. However, when I started the UCS1001 module, I encountered an unexpected challenge: writer's block. Drafting my first report, such as the reader response, made me realize how different writing in an engineering context is compared to my prior experience in business courses. The parameters, such as structure and content, were more technical and posed unique challenges.
Over time, with constructive feedback from my classmates and Prof. Blackstone, I gradually organized my thoughts and identified patterns in engineering reports. Slowly but surely, I developed confidence in writing reports tailored to the engineering field. Learning key elements such as problem and purpose statements, APA citations, and structuring my reports using the "ideal, gap, and goal" framework was transformative.
One of my biggest takeaways was understanding how to craft a clear and focused engineering report. These skills have leveled up my abilities from general business reports to more technical and precise engineering writing. However, I recognize there is still room for improvement, particularly in enhancing the efficiency of my research and refining the clarity of my arguments. Looking ahead, I aim to deepen my understanding of technical documentation and further improve my ability to synthesize complex information. Overall, I am proud of my progress and feel well-prepared to take on future challenges in engineering.
Project Reflection
Our technical report project on suspension systems is particularly meaningful to me. At the start, I had no specific interest in suspension systems. However, as I researched how they work and explored their limitations, my curiosity was sparked. By the end of the project, I had gained a wealth of knowledge and a newfound appreciation for this technology.
This project taught me to think critically and, most importantly, to think creatively. Embracing curiosity helped me discover an interest in a subject I initially had no passion for. Moreover, I developed my ability to communicate effectively with my teammates. While I had an innovative idea for the automatic suspension system, articulating my vision in a way that resonated with my group was challenging at first. Organizing my thoughts and presenting them clearly took effort, but my team’s patience and open-mindedness were instrumental in this process.
Through this experience, I learned the importance of persistence and effective communication in aligning a team’s vision. Collaboration and patience are essential in bringing ideas to life, especially in a group setting. Looking forward, I plan to continue honing my communication and teamwork skills by seeking opportunities to work in diverse teams. This project not only enhanced my technical understanding but also changed my view of learning—showing me that curiosity and collaboration can unlock potential in unexpected areas. I am excited to apply these lessons in future projects and to work effectively in larger, multidisciplinary teams.
